Pinterest Challenge #2

This Pinterest challenge was actually my husband's idea.  I showed him some pins of things that have been created with pallets and it had him dying to create something of his own.  He initially wanted to make shelves with a reclaimed pallet to hang above our new buffet [post about this DIY project coming soon], but I wasn't feeling it.  We already have a clock that I brought before we even moved into our house that I found at Target that I'm in love with and I didn't want to move it at all.  So, I decided that they would make great flower boxes that would accessorize our deck and he was all in.

So here's how it went...

He took one pallet and used a skill saw to make cuts across the 3 beams.

He then took an extra board off the pallet and added it to the bottom to create the box.

He was even able to reuse the wood nails that were already in the pallet to secure everything.

We would have had three flower boxes, but a few of the boards splintered which created an eye sore in my opinion so we decided we would only use two of them.

We sanded them with medium sandpaper and painted them with Clark + Kensington Beach House Blue - 1052.

I put plastic in the inside of the boxes since the boards aren't completely flush to prevent soil from coming out of the bottom.

I used a mixture of Black Kow compost and lime to plant my Wave Petunias. I have purchased Wave Petunias for the past 5 years and they spread like a wild fire without much maintenance and I've always used just regular soil, so I can only imagine how they will do with the compost and lime.

I then added Martha Stewart chalkboard labels to add some of my own flava.

Here's the cost breakdown:

Pallet - free
Nails - free
Paint - free [Ace Hardware has been giving this stuff away on Satudays...score!]
Martha Stewart Chalkboard Labels - $3.99
Compost/Lime - free [from what I previously purchased for my garden]
(4) Wave Petunias - $3.99 ea. at Lowe's $15.96

Total Project Cost:  $19.95

So...whatcha think??

  1. So cute! How can I get my husband to be as motivated as yours? He does stuff, but he's never DYING to do it, lol!

    Great work!

    1. Lol! We've always done projects together and believe me he would rather be watching a game or relaxing sometimes, but he also just really likes being involved with the decor of our home.

  2. I LOVE these! I have seen them used as bookshelves on pinterst before, but I love that you made them as flower boxes! I love the color too. Perfect! Thanks so much for entering this as well into the Project Pinterest Challenge! Good Luck!

  3. Visiting from Happy Hour Projects! I love pallet projects and this is so cute! =)

  4. I can't believe that my husband just got rid of several pallets. This is the third really cute thing I've seen made from them!

    1. I have soooo many things I want to create with pallets...I just have to stack up on some!

  5. Cute flower boxes. I'm just not understanding where he cut them???

    1. He cut the right and left outside boards of each end of the pallet which gave us two flower boxes to work with. The remaining boards were used to make the bottoms that were attached. I hope this helps!

  6. I just bought this color and I have to say, on your project the color looks very different! Much more blue than I expected...

    1. Maybe your color wasn't mixed correctly, but my color does look just like the picture.

  7. Way to dress up the deck! I love how you took a Pinterest idea and added your own special tweek. I'd love it if you would link this up to my new linky party, "What We Accomplished Wednesday." It goes live about 6:00 PM eastern time tonight. Have a great week!
