Guest Post: Notation Furniture Limited

Why Wooden Furniture is Best when Furnishing Your Home
Having recently refurnished my home I know how stressful it can be, but I found that once I had identified a style that I liked it wasn’t too difficult. This is because once you have found a style then you can simply find items for each room of the house within this style, and this is how you develop a consistent theme throughout. I think that this is the most important aspect of interior design, as different styles and colour themes can really clash and make the home lack character and personality, two of the most essential things that your home needs to have.
People immediately notice things like furniture and decoration as soon as they step through the door, so it is important that you put some effort in so that you can make a good impression and keep a stylish home. Whether you are furnishing just one room or the entire house, it is important to find a style that goes with your walls and flooring, and this is why generally I think simple colours and wooden furniture is the best. Another important thing to note with furnishings is that you should not overdo it, as if your house is rammed with chairs, cabinets, tables, drawers and more then it can become very cramped and hard to move around. So before you splash the cash, make a plan for each room and what you should have in there to make it practical, stylish and comfortable.
Different Wooden Furniture Types
Wooden furniture suits all sorts of different styles, and there are also different types of wooden furniture too such as mahogany for a deep, rich and elegant feel, walnut for a clean and modern look and oak furniture for a more traditional feel, and there are plenty of other types as well. To find the best items and also furnishings for every room in the house it is worthwhile checking out wooden furniture suppliers like Notation Furniture, and this means you should be able to find everything you need in one place.
I now have some beautiful wooden furniture in my home which I find complements the style of the decoration well, but not only this it is also comfortable and practical as well. So whether you are furnishing the whole house or just replacing a few items then make sure you look at the different types of wooden furniture available, and remember not to overcrowd rooms with too many items.

Guest Post: Creating a Winter Wonderland with Christmas Decorations

All of a sudden the Christmas period is nearly upon us, which means that all of your holiday plans need to start to be arranged. This is a fun and exciting time of the year where you get to relax and spend some quality time with your family and friends, but as you probably know the run up to Christmas can be incredibly stressful! It will include making your plans for the day itself, social occasions over the whole holiday, presents for friends and family, food, getting a Christmas tree, decorating the home and much, much more.

I have found it best to start your preparation early, and also to make a list of things that you need to do. This will make everything seem a bit more manageable, and this way you know that you wont forget anything either. One of the more enjoyable bits which everyone can help with is the decorating of your home, and this can also be some good fun as well and is sure to get you in the mood for the festive period. Here is a small list of some of the decorations you may want for your home:

  • A decorated tree
  • Tinsel
  • Lights
  • Candles
  • Cards
  • Holly
  • Stockings

Setting the Tone with Christmas Lights

These are just a few of the items you may include, and I’m sure that you and your family have your own ideas and traditions when it comes to decorating for Christmas. For me it is the lights that are the most important, as these can be used to decorate and draw attention both inside and outside, and they can be used to illuminate the rest of the decorations too. Icicle lights are a popular choice because they are an easy way to make your home look like a Christmas wonderland, and if you head to a specialist light supplier, like Brightlightz, then you will be able to view all kinds of different colors, lengths and styles too.

Having your home decorated and ready for Christmas is a great way to start the festive period, as this way you will always have the holidays on your mind and remember what else needs to get done. It will also put anyone who passes by or anyone who pops round in a good mood, and being happy and social is a huge part of what makes Christmas such a special time of the year.

From Brassy to Classy! A Pharmacy Lamp Makeover

As usual I was browsing a local thrift store when I ran across this pharmacy lamp that needed some lovin'.  I was thrilled to find a lamp in such good condition and for just $15, it was a steal compared to a similar version sold here for $693.

It was a little too brassy for my taste and had some bruises that needed healing, but we could manage.

I removed the base of the lamp so that I could use a hammer to lightly push out the dent.

I figured that Rub-n-Buff is all the rage at the moment, so I decided that I would try it out.  I wanted to give the lamp a more expensive bronze look.  It was a total DIY disaster!  It didn't work at all for me.  My husband said that I didn't have the buffing technique down....well whatever! I was on to my next option.

I decided to go with good ol' metallic gold spray paint to give it the look I was going for and it turned out perfect!  No fail here!!

Guest Post: Injecting Some Personality and Color into Home

Having just recently redecorated my own bedroom, I know what a stressful and time consuming task it can be. It is not until you begin the process that you realize just how much work there is to be done, and this is why you should always make a plan before making a mess of everything. Your bedroom needs to be a reflection of your own personality, and as well as this it needs to be a space in which you can relax and unwind in, so you need to keep this in mind when you are thinking about the décor and furniture that you will have in this space.
I find that the best place to begin is the wallpaper, as this is probably the most noticeable aspect and something that covers the most area in the room. This is the foundation of your bedroom, and all the other elements, like the flooring and furniture, will need to be in tune with the style and color that you pick. So what style wallpaper should you pick? This is a tough question and will come down to your own personality and taste, but I would advice against going with one plain, boring color. This is because this is something that everyone does, and it does not inject any sense of personality or fun into the room, so instead you should consider something a bit bolder.

Picking Out Unique and Colorful Designs

By doing your wallpaper shopping at a specialist retailer, like WallpaperSales, you will find an enormous range of bold and colorful wallpapers which are sure to grab your attention. I personally like Arthouse Wallpaper, as you can find some very bold and confident designs which will not overpower the room, which is something that you need to think about when picking out your wallpaper. Arthouse wallpaper uses a variety of vibrant colors and prints which can set the tone for the rest of the room, and you could even find furniture in the same style to really complement the wallpaper too.

Once you have picked out your own wallpaper it will suddenly make the task of decorating much easier, and this is because you will have a theme and style to work around. The next stages will involve the flooring, furnishing the room (be careful not to over do it), and then a few final touches like hanging posters/photos and anything else to add some personality.

Guest Post: The Secret to Completing Your Homes Look

In my opinion, interior design is all about the small details within the home. Some of these details are often overlooked, and this can make the difference between a stylish and well designed home and an average looking one. So, what are these small details that you can get to complete the look of your home?

  • The front door
  • Other doors inside your home
  • Door accessories (handles, chains and letterbox)
  • Locks
  • House Number/name signs outside your home
  • The bell or knocker
  • Window handles and latches
  • Cabinet handles and knobs
  • Hinges and stays
  • Hanging Plants

As you can see, these are some accessory type items for your home, and you will also notice that most of these are to do with the entrance to your home and the entrance to rooms in your home. This is because these will be some of the first things that any visitors or guest will notice, so you will want these accessories to impress them and set the tone for the rest of the style of the house too.
Adding Some Style with Different Handles and Other Accessories

I would first start with the front door and the other doors in your home, as these are the most noticeable parts and also the ones that you can do the most with. Starting with the front door, you could add a stylish bell and letterbox to the outside, as well as perhaps some chrome or brass numbers too, and this will add some elegance which people will notice immediately. Of course it is important not to overdo the front door, so I would simply stick with a few items like this.
Moving inside you can add some style to the doors with a range of different handle or knob styles, and for the widest range it is worthwhile checking out what specialist stores, like the Handle Store, have in stock, and this will give you the best options. Many shops like this will also carry more accessory type items for your home ,which will really improve its overall look and help turn it from a house into a home. These are often overlooked interior design features that can really make the difference, so they are certainly worthwhile investing in and there are a range of different materials and styles that you can go for too, which means that you should be able to find items in tune with the rest of the style of your house.

How to Quickly, Easily and Cheaply Furnish a Property if you are a Landlord

Any landlord will be highly aware of how stressful and time consuming it can be furnishing a property, and it is particularly difficult because you know that you will not be the one using and enjoying the items. However it is absolutely essential that you have high quality, attractive furniture in place in your property, as this way it will greatly improve the overall look and feel of the place, and it could also play a big part in getting tenants as well.

When furnishing a property as a landlord the same rules as furnishing your own home apply, and this is that you need to pick a particular theme and style and stick with it throughout the home. This will give a complete feel which will help turn the house into a home, and this is something that anyone living here will want to feel. By clashing different colors and different styles it will have no character and personality, and because of this it will not be a pleasant place for somebody to live in.

Get the Entire Property Furnished Within 24 Hours

So if you are a landlord and you need to furnish your property, what is the most effective way to do this? Thankfully there are companies out there that can do all of the hard work for you, and this is through providing landlord furniture packages. They can furnish your entire property with high quality, stylish items which will create character and atmosphere, and also be practical and comfortable as well.

A lot of these companies that provide furniture for landlords will even offer next day delivery and installation, so if you need to get your place furnished as soon as possible then this is a terrific way to do this, and you won’t even have to lift a finger either! Whether you are furnishing a student accommodation, a large penthouse or anything in between you should be able to find a furniture package that will suit the property and really add some character to it.

This service really alleviates a lot of stress that furnishing a property can bring, and not only this but it is also extremely cost and time effective too, so take a look at one of these companies and see the range of furniture packages that are available to you today.

Guest Post: Feng Shui Your Home

Almost everyone in the western world longs for a more peaceful, tranquil day to day existence. Of course this is not all that easy to achieve given the hectic and demanding structure of our society. However Feng Shui (pronounced “Fung Shwey”) suggests that we can help to shield ourselves from undesirable energies in our homes, through the arrangement of your possessions and the systematic placement of furniture. The chief concept or belief is that an easy-flowing, unblocked stream of energy moving throughout your house will ultimately have a calming effect on the individuals who inhabit it. Badly placed furniture however, can have the opposite effect. Though the art of Feng Shui can seem complicated in its most detailed form, the basic principles can be understood and applied right away.

Clear Away the Clutter

This is one of the guiding principles of Feng Shui. The only objects that should remain in your personal space are items that are useful, attractive or in some way significant to you. If you allow your personal space to become overrun with objects that are either broken or purposeless, the energy of the space and indeed your own energy will both become overwhelmed. As humans we often hide behind the false security of material possessions to which we hold no real value or connection. It's common sense that by freeing ourselves of these unnecessary burdens, we quite literally clear the air of unwanted and repressive energies.

 Feng Shui Furniture Placement

As much as clearing away unnecessary clutter allows positive energy to flow through your home, having sharp-cornered furniture or angular objects can in fact restrict the flow of this energy. Therefore, when selecting new furniture for your home, always opt for furniture that has smooth edges, to allow energy to flow more freely. Likewise, think about how your already existing furniture may be restricting the flow of energy. You may find that you need to replace some of your old energy restricting furniture with some lovely rounded oak pieces from Top Furniture.

Of course it would be impossible to instill with any detail all of subtleties and specifics of Feng Shui in just a short article. But these basic principles should at least give you a good starting point. And should you wish to delve deeper and employ Feng Shui throughout your house, a fantastic resource can be found here.

Guest Post: Adding Some Elegant French Style into Your Home

Have you ever walked through somebody’s front door and just felt that their house was lacking some character and personality? This is something that unfortunately seems to happen a lot, and the reason for this is that lots of people seem to neglect properly decorating and furnishing their home. This seems very strange to me as your house should be the most important place in the world and you should take pride in its appearance, and as well as this, decorating and furnishing is a great way to show off your personality and get a bit creative too.

Perhaps the reason that people do not bother to decorate their homes is because they see it as some mammoth, never ending chore, but it does not have to be like this. Of course you are not going to get the whole house done in a week, but I find that by breaking it down into sections it becomes a lot easier to do and also easier to see the big picture too. Before diving in though, you will want to find a particular interior design style to have that runs throughout the house, as otherwise you may end up with clashing styles which is one of the worst things that you could do.

Finding High Quality, Stylish French Furniture
Picking out a style that you like can be difficult as there are so many different ones out there, so it will really come down to your own taste and personality. I personally love the look of French furniture, and this is because it has a sense of elegance and sophistication which can look great in any home. There are lots of beautiful pieces that you can pick up for all areas of the home, and this allows you to develop a consistent theme throughout the house. The other great thing about French furniture is that its simplicity means that it can generally go well with most colors, so you will not necessarily be restricted as to what color scheme you pick either.
To find the most elegant and high quality items it is worthwhile visiting a boutique, like The French Bedroom Company, as at specialist boutiques you can find all the items that you need for your home in once place. You may want to buy in bulk, although remember that the best way to go about decorating is to go room by room, so perhaps buy what you need for each room separately.

Seeing Spots: Les Touches Fabric Hack

Why am I just discovering my love for this "reinvented" fabric that has been a classic for decades?  Les Touches is a classic way to use animal print in your design without being too forward.
Les Touches has been used by design legends like Billy Baldwin, Geoffrey Beene and Van Day Truex, just to name a few.
I wanted to get my hands on some Les Touches fabric or score a few pillows to add to my obsession collection. I ran across a few that I loved, but with the price tags they had I knew I couldn't convince the Hubs to love it that much!
I mean check it out!  $114 for just the pillow cover!  For that price it better come with a real soft goose stuffed inside!  Sometimes I hate that I have such expensive taste, but hey this girls got style!
So what do you do when you have champagne taste and a beer budget?  You DIY it!  I went to Google to find some patterns to follow and found these....
I wanted to get an up close view of the design for all of the little details and the one below so that I would have a pattern to follow.
On my first attempt, I used a gold Sharpie with a fine tip.  I couldn't find the ultra fine tip in the gold so I had to make do.  The gold didn't turn out they way I wanted it to.  I wanted a more metallic color, but I don't mind it so much since the pattern turned out great!

I repeated the technique with the teal Sharpie, but this time I used both the ultra fine and fine tip markers.  I don't think there is a huge difference either way.  So if you attempt this at home, just take your time and let you creative side flow and you can have your very own Les Touches fabric in no time!

Oh, and the pillow cover is from Ikea, which cost me a whole $3.  The Sharpie was on sale for $0.88, so my pillow came in just under $4.  I'd say the knockoffs were totally worth it!

Gold Zebra Lined Bookcases

I've been dying over here waiting to share this amazing transformation with you guys!  I've always been a little reserved with my style, but I decided it was time to spice things up a bit!

I found these custom 7 ft. tall bookcases on Craigslist a few months back for just $50.  My plan was to paint them white and add some lighting over them. Well...the lighting that I picked up from Ikea didn't work out and my husband hated them!  My first attempt at painting them failed because I used Valspar paint + primer and after three coats I could still see the original wood stain on them.

After weeks of letting them sit while trying to recover from my failed attempts, I finally got motivated to paint them again.  I went with what I knew would work this time, instead of using a cheaper product.  I went with Clark + Kensington paint plus primer in ultra white and they turned out great!

But like always, I was looking to try something different.  This bright idea came to reality when I was in HomeGoods and ran across Stone Wrap paperless wrapping paper in this gold animal print and I knew that this was it!  This would work!  But would my husband like it?  Who cares right!? I knew he'd love it once it was finished, so I brought two rolls and headed home.

The most challenging part of this project was cutting the paper to the exact width and length of the bookcases.  I also knew that I wanted to make sure that it wasn't permanent just in case I hated it, so I applied just a small amount of glue in each corner using my hot glue gun. Once I was finished, I knew that it was the right decision!  I love how it turned out!  It definitely gives my living room some "flava".
